Children's Activities at Governors Island
City of Water Day is a day for family fun and children's activities as well! The following activities are confirmed and more are added everyday. Please check back continuously for the most up-to-date listing of events.
- Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at Building 92 - Brooklyn Navy Yard Center will host an interactive table for children to create their own artwork, while families can learn all about the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
- Governors Island Alliance - Children are invited to play in educational harbor ecology and history games on a large 30 x 30 ft moveable foam board map of the New York-New Jersey estuary.
Tangerine ClarkGreenpoint Monitor Museum - Get a taste of American warship history! Families can view engaging, historical slide shows about the USS Monitor, the first ironclad warship commissioned by the United States Navy during the American Civil War.
- National Lighthouse Museum – This table will capture the imagination of children and adults alike as they learn about the history of lighthouses, their keepers, and the story of the future Museum site at the original US Lighthouse General Depot in St. George, Staten Island. This also includes giveaways and affordable merchandise!
- Oliver Tilden Camp No. 26 Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War – Want to know what life was like during the civil war? This table previews historical slideshow presentations of the Civil War.
- Randall's Island Park Alliance – The Children’s Fair will be chalk-full of educational and engaging displays and handouts, including competitive trivia games, temporary tattoo art and other fun art activities! Bonus, trivia players will have the chance to win t-shirts, hats, and binoculars.
- Solar One - With Solar One, children will have the unique opportunity to play with solar panels, engaging with green energy in a variety of ways, including racing mini-solar cars! Children will also have the option of making their own estuary animal puppets, playing an educational game about power plants, and much more.

- Urban Park Rangers, NYC - Come take an imaginary journey below the East and Hudson Rivers and explore the marine life beneath the city’s surface! Also learn more about opportunities for FREE weekend programs in NYC parks.
- Appalachian Mountain Club New York North Jersey Chapter – AMC – Break out those kayaks! Come for free kayaking demonstrations and learn more about this fun, adventurous hobby for all!
- Friends of Liberty State Park - Come learn about the Friends of Liberty State Park and their active gardening volunteer program. Friends of LSP hats and key chains will be sold! And get your free temporary tattoo!
- Hackensack River Keeper- Enjoy the view of the entire harbor with a spotting scope. Both children and adults can view the harbor with large visual displays and as part of literaturei
